Overview

The spatial filter allows Transparent Earth users to query for and display layer information within a specific area on the map, instead of the whole map. Users can create spatial views with the following tools:

  • Filter Layers by Circle
  • Filter Layers by Rectangle
  • Filter Layers by Polygon
  • Filter Layers by Current View
  • Clear All Filters

Creating a Spatial Filter View allows users to view specific features only within a defined area.

All records that reside on or inside the boundary line will display. Any record of the same layer that is outside of the boundary will not display.

If a record intersects with the filter boundary line that entire feature will display. For example: If a line touches or crosses the spatial filter view boundary line, the entire line will display.

Enabling the Spatial Filter

Navigate to and zoom into the general area of interest on the map.2.Click the Spatial Filter icon.

Clicking the Spatial Filter icon puts the map in Spatial Filter Mode:a.All layers that were already selected will be cleared from the screen.b.The label at the top of the map indicates that the Map is in Spatial Filter Mode.c.Enables the spatial view query tools: Filter by CircleRectanglePolygonCurrent ViewClear All Filters[].

Filter by Circle

With the Spatial Filter Mode enabled:

  1. Click the Filter Layers By Circle icon.
  2. Left-click and drag the cursor to draw the desired circle size.
  3. Upon release, the circle will display a green border around the area of interest.
  4. In the Layer panel, select the layers you want to see.

  5. Labels for the layers selected will turn green.
  6. Each layer will display on the map on or within the circle border.

Filter by Rectangle:

With the Spatial Filter Mode enabled:

  1. Click the Filter Layers By Rectangle icon.
  2. Left-click and drag the cursor to draw desired rectangle size.
  3. Upon release, the rectangle will display a green border around the area of interest.
  4. In the Layer panel, select the layers you want to see.

  5. Labels for the layers selected will turn green.
  6. Each layer will display on the map on or within the rectangle border.

Filter by Polygon

With the Spatial Filter Mode enabled:

  1. Click the Filter Layers By Polygon icon.
  2. Left-click to set first polygon point.
  3. Move to the desired second point location and left click.
  4. Move to the desired third point location and left click. A polygon can have as many points as you would like, but must have a minimum of three.
  5. Once you have drawn the desired polygon double-click to complete the polygon.
  6. After the double-click your selected layers will appear within the green border of the polygon

Filter by Current View

With the Spatial Filter Mode enabled:

  1. Click the Filter Layers By Current View icon.
  2. A green border will appear around your whole current view
  3. Showing any selected layers within the green border

  4. Zoom out and your rectangle will still show the same area contained in the border
  5. No points should show up out of the green border

Clear the Spatial Map Filter

With the Spatial Filter Mode enabled, and the results displaying on the map:

1.Click the Clear all Filters icon.

  • Any Spatial Filter View created on the map will clear from the screen.
  • Any layer selected and highlighted in the Layer panel will be deselected and have no green highlight.
