Markup Tools

This Section will outline how to use the Markup tools in Transparent Earth.

 

Quick Process Reference

  1. Open and log into TransparentEarth browser with UserID and Password.
  2. From the main toolbar, click Activate Markup Tools.
  3. Zoom to the area of interest.

Measuring Linear Distance andArea:

  1. Click the Measure Linear Distance icon (first icon from the top) to measure linear distance.
  2. Click the Measure Area icon (second icon from the top) to measure area.
  3. Click the Clear All Measures icon (third icon from the top) to clear all linear and area lines and measurements.

 

Creating generic Points, Linesand Polygons:

  1. Click the Draw Markup Point__ icon (fourth icon from the top) to draw a markup point.
  2. Click the Draw Markup Line__ icon (fifth icon from the top) to draw a markup line.
  3. Click the Draw Markup Polygon__ icon (sixth icon from the top) to draw a markup polygon.
  4. Click the Delete Markup icon (bottom icon) to enable deleting each markup line and measurement individually.
  5. To change units of measurement for lines and polygons, access the Personal Settings__ menu.

 

  MeasuringLinear Distance

  1. From the main toolbar, click the Activate Markup Tools icon.

    The seven (7) Markup Tools icons display in the upper left corner of the map.
  2. Zoom to the area of interest.
  3. Click the Measure Linear Distance icon. 
    Use this tool to measure distance of a straight or curved line.

  4. Click on the map for your desired start point. 
    Your cursor will be ready, and you will see measurement of distance along with unit of measure as you move the cursor around without clicking again.
  5. Click on the map in as many places as needed to measure the distance of this line.
  6. Each time you click on the map, a vertex will be created. You will see two (2) measurements: 
    a measurement of the section 
    a measurement of the whole line, all sections included.

  7. To end the line, double-click at the end-point of the line you want to measure. 
    The line will display with each section measurement, as well as the overall line distance.

 Measuringan Area

  1. From the main toolbar, click the Activate Markup Tools icon.

  2. Zoom to the area of interest.
  3. Click the Measure Area icon.

    Click on the map at your start point. Your cursor will be ready, and a small white point displays, at the end of your mouse pointer.
  4. Move to the second place on the map, and click again. 
    Each time you click on the map, a vertex will be created. 
    The units displayed will be result of choice in Personal Settings.

  5. Move to the third point on the map, and click again.
  6. Add as many vertexes to the polygon as desired to measure the area.
  7. When desired area is outlined double-click to end the area measurement. 
    The sides of the area will be labeled with each measurement, and the entire area of the polygon will be labeled with a measurement.

Drawing Markup Point

  1. From the main toolbar, click the Activate Markup Tools icon.

  2. Zoom to the area of interest.
  3. Click the Draw Markup Point icon.

    The mouse pointer will display with a small blue circle around the tip.
  4. Click on the map at the desired point. 
    An orange sphere/point will display when complete.

Drawing Markup Line

  1. From the main toolbar, click the Activate Markup Tools icon.

  2. Zoom to the area of interest.
  3. Click the Draw Markup Line icon. 
      RTENOTITLE
    The mouse pointer will display with a small blue circle around the tip.
  4. Click on the map at the desired point. 
    Your line will start at that location on the map, and a blue line will be attached to the point of your cursor.
  5. Move cursor as desired to create a line, clicking to create vertexes.
  6. To end the line, double-click. 
    The Markup Line will turn orange in color when complete.

Drawing Markup Polygon

  1. From the main toolbar, click the Activate Markup Tools icon.

  2. Zoom to the area of interest.
  3. Click the Draw Markup Polygon icon.

    a. The mouse pointer will display with a small blue circle around the tip. 
    b. Click on the map at the desired point. 
    c. Your polygon will start at that location on the map, and a blue line will be attached to the point of your cursor. 
    Move cursor as desired to create first side of polygon, clicking to create first vertex.
  4. At the third vertex, the polygon’s area will be blue in color.
  5. Continue clicking where desired to create the shape you need.
  6. Double-click when finished. 
    The Markup Polygon will turn orange in color when complete.

 Deleting a measurement (line or an area)

  1. From the main toolbar, click the Activate Markup Tools icon.

  2. To clear all the measurements created on the map:
  3. Click the Clear All Measurements icon.

    All measurements created on the map will be deleted
  4. To clear individual measurements or unit labels:
  5. Click the Delete Markup icon.

    Vertices of the measurements created will now have a circle around the units.
  6. Click on each measurement line or polygon you want to delete.
    1. To delete the unit label on the measurement, click the circle that surrounds the unit label. 
      The unit label will disappear.
    2. Each item will be deleted as you click it.

 

Deleting a Markup Point, Line, or Polygon

  1. From the main toolbar, click the Activate Markup Tools icon.

  2. Click the last Delete Markup icon.

  3. Click the Markup Point, Line, or Polygon that you desire to remove. 
    The feature will disappear.

'Changing units of measureChanging the units of measure that display with the Measure Linear Distance and Measure Area tools are modified in Personal Settings.Access Personal'Settings by clicking the Personal Setting icon (under your user name in the upper left corner of the dashboard).
